San Francisco State Rally to Reject Tuition Hike
Students to Establish Occupy SFSU Encampment
San Francisco State University (SFSU) – November 29, 2011 – Occupy SFSU today announced a rally starting at 3:00pm on Thursday, December 1, at Malcolm X Plaza, to reject the 9% tuition hike approved for next school year by the California State University (CSU) Trustees. Occupy SFSU, a local university-affiliated Occupy organization, will join a call by Lieutenant Governor and Ex Officio Trustee Gavin Newsom to reconsider the vote at the CSU Trustees meeting of November 16 at the next CSU Trustees meeting on Monday, December 5.
To score their determination to turn back the tuition increases, students and supporters plan to rally, march, and pitch tents on Thursday, December 1, to establish an Occupy SFSU encampment.
The students intend to ask SFSU President Robert A. Corrigan to pledge his support for the tuition rollback and to lobby other CSU Presidents and the CSU Trustees to seek a December 5 revote. The original vote was 9-6, although some trustees were not present.
In addition to rejecting the 9% tuition increase, Occupy SFSU plans to highlight a variety of issues at the rally, including:
- Reverse CSU’s 283% tuition hikes since 2002
- Rehire the 4,000 CSU faculty terminated since 2008.
- Reduce class sizes and restore canceled classes.
- Eliminate student loan debt.
- Cap CSU executive salaries and bonuses.
- Reinstate affirmative action to ensure access for all students.
- Solidarity with Occupy everywhere.
This Occupy SFSU rally follows a walkout, attended by hundreds of students and supporters on November 15, which stormed the SF State Administration building to demand a meeting with President Corrigan.
Occupy SFSU holds General Assemblies at 12:00 noon every Monday and Thursday at Malcolm X Plaza and has a website at http://www.occupysfsu.org
